Alocasia odora x Alocasia reginula
a.k.a. Alocasia 'Regal Shields'
This Alocasia hybrid is one of our 2007 successes, and also one of the ones we thought most improbable. Alocasia odora and Alocasia reginula couldn't be more different morphologically, and yet we were still able to obtain seven viable seeds from this cross. Having succeeded with this combination, we are encouraged that we can develop what I consider to be a "Holy Grail" of Alocasia hybridization, and that is the hybrid involving A. nebula 'Imperialis' and A. odora.
These plants are not full grown, but the leaf texture is already thicker than that of leaves on A. odora. One of the seedling selections of this cross is the plant called Alocasia 'Regal Shields' that is now on the market and patented.
Regal Shields is US Plant Patent PP27,050, patent date August 9, 2016.Above can be seen three of the seedlings from this cross. Note the differing leaf shapes and textures obtained.
